samuel metford was a prominent silhouette artist born in glastonbury somerset in 1810, he moved to america in 1834 to continue his art until 1844 when he came back to england, metford was taught by augustin edouart, the best french exponent of silhouette profiles.
provenance- bought from their decendants, the young boy is albert simpson born 1838 and his sister emily simpson (spencer) born 1840 and this is documented on the back of the silhouette.
